The visual first impression is the most important element to my art! It is also

important that the design, surface texture, and glazing “dance” together. All of my

work is hand built using clay slabs, or extruded through a clay press. I construct

wood forms to hold and secure the clay while I texture the surface with stamps or

rollers. Early in my life with clay I discovered that the glaze can ruin a piece, or

make it great. So I have tested hundreds of glazes, read every book, and talked to

many fellow potters to establish a solid inventory of glazes and combinations that

enhance my pieces. I’m very proud of my body of work, and hope you will also

enjoy what I have done!

Katrina Swanson

Katrina became interested in art at a very young age; she remembers watching her mother paint and wanting to paint too. She was first formally exposed to design and color concepts and the watercolor medium when she enrolled in Metropolitan Community College in 1987 to pursue an Associate Degree in commercial art.

Katrina won several local art shows with her realistic watercolors from 1991 through 1996. In 1997 she was selected as a Signature Member of the National Watercolor Society and won the Winsor Newton Award for her painting “Bumblebee Banquet”.

In 2003 Katrina put aside her watercolors and started painting with oils. She had studied the

realistic and impressionist masters of the 20th century and was particularly fascinated with the work of Richard Estes and Edward Hopper. She has used that inspiration to paint Omaha's Old Market and surrounding areas that have the mood and impression she wants to portray. Katrina also likes to paint repeating shapes, with vibrant colors and textures that she observes in chairs, signs, bicycles and other vintage objects.

Katrina is a member of the International Guild of Realism, the National Oil and Acrylic Painters Society, and the Missouri Valley Impressionists Society. She is currently mentoring high school students at the Kent Bellows Mentoring Program through Joslyn Art Museum. She has also worked with Girl Scouts over the last ten years as part of their artVenture Program.

Katrina has several paintings in collections across the state at Wayne State College, UNO Mammel Hall and the UNO Engagement Center.

Cindy Rae Mathiasen

I opened my eyes to the world on a winter solstice morning in the Loess Hills of southwest Iowa. Pretty ordinary baby boomer growing up in a herd of kids where every house on the block had a small herd as well. We roamed more than kids do now. Messing around is a good thing. Time to dream.

My creative spirit was evident with an active imagination and I would spend hours as a child reading/drawing/coloring/watching. As an adult, after raising children and a busy career in nursing, I began to work on my creative side by taking classes with John Miller. The opportunity to make art is a childhood dream come true that took dedication and daily practice..  It was difficult, at first, to present myself as an artist to the world. But I have learned to fail and keep making art. I'm as proud of the art that never leaves the studio as those that sell. Every piece has a story, every piece is my gift to the world.  My art resides in homes and businesses around the globe but the point is still to just make art. Every day.

My love of nature - whether it is watching birds feeding on the wall outside the kitchen window, contemplating the locust tree standing guard, or gazing into the sky provides inspiration. Life is full of surprises and every art piece has surprised me along its way. Those surprises are the best and make the piece its own.

As a predominantly abstract painter inspired by nature and landscape, my goal is to capture the feeling, the energy and the bring it to the viewer, giving a renewed sense of hope and inspiration.

My message to the world is make something, write something, hug the universe. Be you.
